Gold performs well with depressed “real” interest rates. And “real” interest rates are not the same as the nominal rates we see with the Fed Funds rate or the 10-year Treasury bond.

In simple terms, the real interest rate is the current Fed Funds rate, less the current rate of inflation.

 When the real interest rate is negative, investors lose money. And it’s all due to inflation.
